ApexSQL September II 2018 newsletter - All about using the transaction log for replication, auditing, recovery and more Click here to view this newsletter in your browser ApexSQL September II 2018 newsletter In the last newsletter, we talked a bit about ApexSQL Log and how reading transaction log can be helpful in more than just a few situations. However, since a couple of sentences can't do justice to all the mighty powers of our transaction log reader, we decided to dedicate this entire newsletter to it. Interested in using a single tool for SQL Server replication, auditing, load testing or recovery purposes? Keep reading... Auditing ApexSQL Log is most commonly used for auditing purpose, which is why we're starting our tour here. Forensic auditing - Post-incident investigation is actually one of the most common usage of ApexSQL Log, which is why we prepared a couple of use case based articles to help you learn how to use ApexSQL Log to forensically audit your database and get to the bottom of that 'crime' DDL auditing - Check out how you can utilize ApexSQL Log to filter out, examine, report and export on all schema changes made to a database Before-after auditing - Drill down and see the values before and after the change has occurred on the row level, even before the ApexSQL Log was installed Continuous auditing - Check out how to continuously poll a transaction log and redirect output to a database, to create an easily accessible, always current, query-able version of your transaction log data. Monitoring Although not its primary purpose, ApexSQL Log, with its continuous auditing feature, can be used to isolate problems, assess any impacts to the overall system and configure reports to create a wealth of valuable aggregate information, such as transactional volumes by day, user, table application, machine etc. Restores and recovery Beside the auditing purpose of ApexSQL Log, another popular type of usage is recovery. After identifying who made the inadvertent changes, where and when as described above, one of the critical tasks after the database was affected by the disaster is to roll back those inadvertent changes and revert both structure and data to the pre-disaster original state. See also: Row-level recovery - See how to use ApexSQL Log to restore lost or damaged data, down to the row level, directly from a backup, or even the online log, without having to restore the entire database Point in time recovery - Similar to row-level recovery, ApexSQL Log can also help with restore only the specific database tables back in time without affecting other tables which do not require a rollback SQL injection attacks - SQL injection attacks are certainly no fun, but luckily, ApexSQL Log can help you immediately identify SQL injection attacks, isolate affected/damaged data and reverse/repair the damage. Load testing Interested in testing how your usual production loads will reflect on each new build of the database? Use ApexSQL Log to easily record loads on production and then replay them on staging, simulating a production environment Replication Mentioning transactional replication abilities of ApexSQL Log in the last newsletter raised quite an interest. Now we are presenting other use cases for using ApexSQL Log for the replication purposes Peer to peer, bi-directional replication - Check out how to replicate uni-directional process for each pear to perform bi-directional replication Cross-platform replication - SQL Server still doesn't support cross-platform replication on Linux... but this not a problem for you as you can use ApexSQL Log replicate from SQL Server on a Windows machine to Linux or any other combination Reporting servers - Utilize ApexSQL Log to maintain a reporting version of production database by offloading performance intensive queries Consolidated reporting - See how to set up ApexSQL Log to create multiple publishers into a single Subscriber to consolidate data across disparate databases, to provide a single, centralized reporting database. Migrations and restores The major flaw of database migrations and usual point-in-time restores is that they might result in loss of certain data. Learn how to prevent this data loss during SQL Server database migrations with ApexSQL Log Discounts In one of the previous newsletters, we offered 20% off all ApexSQL Log purchases, but with more features comes a bigger discount, so we're now offering 50% discount on all ApexSQL purchases for all our subscribers.
