ApexSQL July 2017 newsletter II – Web monitoring tool face lift, new productivity features (CRUD, Execution alerts), Summer discounts

ApexSQL July 2017 newsletter - New product announced – ApexSQL Enforce – SQL development rules based review and enforcement   Click here to view this newsletter in your browser         ApexSQL July 2017 newsletter II     Although we have no new products to announce today (which is a change), we do have some great stuff to cover in this edition of our newsletter... New major version – test data generator We released a new version of ApexSQL Generate since the last newsletter. This latest release was primarily to catch the tool up with our other developer tools in terms of Amazon RDS and SQL 2017 CTP support. But we also re-wrote the user interface with a new, modern control set and can now offer visual themes (Light, Dark – see below, Colorful) for this product. All remaining product interfaces, that haven’t already been updated, should be updated, as well, in the next few months. One important change is that we have introduced editions to this tool, including a free communuity edition with support for Azure SQL Database, Amazon RDS and SQL Express. So, if you were looking for a synthetic test data generation tool for SQL Server but didn’t want to commit to making a purchase, this is a great way to get your feet wet. We also offer Standard and Professional editions. Please see the compare section of the ApexSQL Generate product page to see all of the features by version. SQL test data generation articles As a quick primer for SQL Server test data generation, here are some articles that show solutions to some SQL Server test data generation challenges SQL Server database continuous integration workflow POPULATE step – Populating the newly built SQL database with data How to generate randomized test data from a CSV file How to use regular expressions (RegEx) in SQL Server to generate randomized test data How to automatically create synthetic test data for a SQL Server database How to create and automate test data generation for a SQL Server database See also See all of our free community editions here See all of our tools for SQL Azure Database here New features – SQL productivity We’ve recently released three new features into ApexSQL Complete, a free SSMS and VS add-in for SQL for improved development productivity including SQL auto-completion Export to Excel This allows users to take query result sets and instantly copy/move/export them to an Excel spreadsheet. CRUD procedures This feature allows users to instantly create CRUD procedures e.g. Update from a pre-defined (and customizable) template, against any table. Read more about this new feature here. Execution alerts This feature guards against inadvertent actions that may have deleterious effects, such as executing a Delete statement without a Where clause. This feature will warn the user and allow them to safely cancel the operation. A powerful feature of our Execution alerts, is the ability for users to create new ones themselves. Read more about this new feature here. Coming soon – new ApexSQL Monitor user interface We’ve been happy with the great reception of the new web based version of ApexSQL Monitor, but we’ve been continuing to innovate in improving the interface, in a way that will make the user experience of this tool, hands down, the best. We already offer an instance explorer that allows users to quickly view instances by custom group and status, while allowing them to drill across into any module. But now we are improving our complimentary main dashboards, to provide even richer detail and functionality, and are will soon be offering two views (vs just one), table/grid and panel/card. New card/panel dashboard We’ve added detail showing individual and summary alert counts to the existing table/grid view, but will also be adding powerful, but easy to use filters to instantly define a smaller sub-set of instances. In addition to this we’ve added an entirely new dashboard of panels/cards, that present the same information differently, and with a bit more detail, especially as the cards can be flipped/inverted to show additional detail. The ETA for this new version is in early September. Stay tuned for more updates in the interim. Click here for a full review of the planned new UI. New table/grid dashboard Help wanted We’ve just posted some information on some interesting and challenging opportunities for collaboration between experienced SQL Server professionals and our company. The opportunities include Public writing Native writing Spot contracts – short, specific assignments paid hourly Fixed bid contracts – larger assignments for a fixed price All tasks and assignments are generally short in duration and can run from a few hours to a few days. But we have quite a few of them and will be increasing the size and complexity of these tasks over time. Click here for more info. Disaster recovery insurance We have gotten requests from customers for a different licensing model that would allow customers with a large number of instances, who wanted to use our ApexSQL Log and ApexSQL Recover for recovery purposes only (vs continuous auditing for ApexSQL Log) to purchase a floating license. This will allow them to deploy the tools on instances, only when needed. For example, in a theoretical shop with 100 instances, with a 5% rate of data recovery need per year, only 5 ad-hoc deployments of these tools would be needed, and even further, only needed for that particular incident. 1 license, only, would fail to help in the other 4 cases, but 5 licenses might be cost prohibitive. With the new floating licenses, customers can purchase a license that would cover 10 incidents. So for $4,999 this shop could cover all of their projected incidents for 2 years, for the equivalent of all of the following. $499 per incident $49 per instance $25 per instance per year As long as incidents remained on the license, you would never be “caught short”. Please contract sales@apexsql.com for more information. You can also purchase these licenses directly from our pricing page.
